As we live in an era of information overload, the medium has increasingly become the message. While this maxim is typically applied to modern media, the design of the written word is just as essential to its comprehension as the message. Memory is an important factor in learning new information. Memorica is designed with the objective of improving memory retention. Typeface design has been shown to be effective in improving memory and even helping those with learning disabilities. For example, creating unique letterforms for each letter can help those with dyslexia. With Memorica, the focus was on creating a type design that improves memory retention for young adults in an age of chronically shortened attention spans.
While there has been research on developing a typeface to improve memory and recall, none have been designed to read long body texts. By combining typography and the psychology of reading, this project explores how typefaces can be designed to aid memory retention. Memorica is an untraditional typeface and requires deeper cognitive processing, which is good for memory retention. The main challenge of designing Memorica was balancing untraditional features such as stylisation with legibility. The varied strokes encourage deeper cognitive processing and allow for a longer reading time
