My project was to create a brand for Auspicious Thai desserts called Waan-Nee Kanomthai. The project began with my family's own Thai restaurant in New York, as I noticed that teenagers there have more appreciation for and interest in Thai desserts than Thai teenagers. I observed Thai Generation Z’s attitudes towards Thai desserts, and noted that this demographic tends to value Western, Japanese or Korean desserts more compared to Thai desserts. They are not only attracted to the desserts, but also to their marketing and packaging. I wanted to change their perspective of Thai desserts as an ‘old people dessert’ by creating packaging sets and rebranding Auspicious Thai desserts. My branding created a new look for Auspicious Thai desserts to increase the appreciation while also helping Thai Generation Z’s see the true values of our own tradition. The desserts were grouped into themes of love, success, and wealth. The themes were found by looking for similarities in the beliefs associated with these desserts from the past, and the themes Generation Z would relate to.
